TIME FOR TURMERIC

Natural plants have been used in several product formulations for over the years. Out of all these natural plant extracts, turmeric is a well-known ingredient across the world. The Latin name of Turmeric is “Curcuma Longa” which comes from the Arabic plant “Kurkuma”. It belongs to the ginger-family and in Sanskrit, it is known as “Haridra”. In Hindi, it is known as “Haldi”. The healing properties of Turmeric lies in the golden finger like stalk, also known as Rhizome. It is commonly used in preparation of Indian curries, skin care products, health supplements and preservatives in food items. It is a warming herb by nature. Turmeric is native to South Asia, but is extensively grown across India especially in regions like West Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. It is also grown in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, China and Jamaica. India is the largest producer of Turmeric in the world.

Turmeric occupies a pious place in traditional Hindu rituals in India. It is a symbol of purity,fertility and good health. Curcumin acts as an antioxidant to counter depression and anxiety. Some other benefits of Turmeric are as follows;

Skin benefits of Turmeric

  • It has anti-bacterial properties and kills acne causing bacteria.
  • It reduces dark circles and enhances skin complexion. It is extremely beneficial in lightening blemishes, dark spots, tanning and pigmentation.
  • It protects skin from UV damage and neutralizes free radicals causing photo-ageing.
  • It reduces stretch marks on body.
  • It soothes dry skin.

Turmeric is one of the most common Indians spices found in the kitchen. Apart from enhancing the taste of food, it is also used along with other ingredients to improve the texture of skin and hair. Here are a few skin/hair recipes that you may try at home:

Turmeric face pack(Turmeric, grounded coffee and yogurt)

  • Mix 1 tbsp of instant coffee, turmeric and yogurt in bowl.
  • Apply the mixture on you face, let it stand for 20 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water to remove dirt and oil.
  • Repeat 2-3 time sin a week to get radiant skin.
The presence of Vitamin C in turmeric helps reduce dark spots. Coffee and turmeric help in building up collagen which tightens the skin. Presence of lactic acid in yogurt helps in healing acne and reduces the signs of ageing.

Turmeric body scrub (Turmeric, sugar, olive oil and Vitamin E oil)

  • Mix 1 tbsp of turmeric with 1 cup of organic sugar (semi-dust).
  • Add 1/4thcup of extra virgin olive oil.
  • 1 tbsp of Vitamin E oil (increases the shelf life of body scrub)

In this pack, sugar plays an excellent exfoliator and removes dead skin and making your skin soft and supple. Turmeric, an anti-microbial brightens the skin. It also reduces body acne. Virgin olive oil is a great skin moisturizer that protects skin from environmental damages. Lastly, Vitamin E oil tightens skin and helps develop collagen. It is also a good organic preservative that improves the shelf life of the scrub.

 

Turmeric hair pack (Turmeric, milk and honey hair mask)

  • Take 4-5 tbsp of Turmeric powder admix it well in a cup of raw milk to from a semi-liquid solution.
  • Add 1 tbsp of honey which acts as conditioner.
  • Apply this pack on your scalp and massage gently. Allow it to dry for half an hour and then wash it off with your regular shampoo.

This treatment can be used to promote hair growth. Turmeric present in the hair mask removes dandruff, controls itching and reduces hair fall. Milk and honey act as conditioners and promote protein in hair.

Serious conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, other fungal infections and disorders like hair thinning, inflammation, and itching can all be treated with Turmeric.
